Port Townsend Eco Village

Port Townsend Eco Village

location:
Port Townsend, WA

The goal of this project was to design an alternative development model for a planned unit subdivision that emphasizes community living and integrates natural processes.

We worked with the property owner to analyze site elements, assess program components and define project goals.  Strategies include three raingardens to manage stormwater and greywater on-site, gravel and grass-pave vehicle surfacing, and footpaths connecting site functions.  All parking is located adjacent to or within the right-of-way to minimize the impact of cars on the site ecology and daily occupants.  House footprints are reduced and structures are clustered to minimize tree clearing and protect the adjacent wetland.  A shared dwelling unit provides for guest accommodation and centralized collective needs such as cooking, laundry and bathing.  Rainwater re-use, composting toilets and a permaculture approach to site cultivation further reduce the environmental impact of the project.
